    I’m not quite sure about what muting a member means. What happens when a member is muted? In what condition will one be muted? Can a member mutes him/herself?

    It's something that Support can do, not the members themselves. It means that a member cannot post on the Forums, and not send or receive PMs. So they are 'muted' in the sense that they cannot 'speak'. They can still register and release books.
    We do it when members break site policies; most often that means that they are posting spam messages on the Forums.
