There's the formal 'Sie' (you formal) and the informal 'Du'/'Ihr'(pl.) (you informal). Which one do you want? One of them or both (which could need a config option to change formal/informal).
-
Hmm, good question. I'm not familiar enough with German conventions to say what would be best in this situation, but my copy is mostly quite informal.
-
Right. Though the average age of beekeepers in Germany is probably above 60 (where the formal form might be more appropriate), the internet and iPhone users are probably well served with the informal 'Du'.
A good way to decide might be if you'd call the individual user by his/her first name, which is best translated by using the informal 'Du'.
-
It's probably safest to stick with Sie throughout.
-
Exactly my question.
Tone of voice is quite important. I'd go with the 'knowledgeable, peer-to-peer, we-know-what-we're-doing-here, day-to-day' style, instead of the 'too-polite, let's-not-thread-on-each-others-toes, sorry-for-not-addressing-you-correctly' style.
I think it would work better for your app and your intended audience, especially in dutch. Not quite sure about flemish, where 'Je', 'Ge', 'U' seem to be usable in informal language ('U' being polite form in dutch, and 'ge' isn't used)Also, the polite form would make the dutch strings quite a bit longer. Unnecessary so, imho.
-
That makes sense. I think it probably depends on the language as to the situation in which the polite forms are used, e.g. in English, polite forms such as "would sir like.." are so rarely used they're basically obsolete. I'll leave it to your judgement.
-
Flemish: I use "u" all the time, but indeed 'je' probably suits the iphone user better, same as with 'du' in German.
-
@goes: we go more informal then? Ik bedoel niet amicaal, maar eerder professioneel informeel
